TRANSPORT AUTHORITY ENDORSES THE INDUSTRY AND TRANSPORT MINISTERS DECISION TO PERMIT THE IMPORTATION OF EIGHT YEAR OLD VEHICLES UNDER A SPECIAL REGIME FOR TAXIS

KINGSTON JAMAICA, MAY 10, 2017

The Transport Authority is endorsing the decision of the Minister of Industry, Commerce,Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Karl Samuda to act on the recommendation of his colleague, Minister Lester “Mike” Henry to allow the importation of eight year old vehicles for use as taxis.
The move should serve to reduce the cost of improving the current fleet of taxis in the public land transportation sector and ease the financial burden on the public transport operators who are frequently challenged to source funding to upgrade their aging vehicles. Additionally, the change in policy will create the opportunity, to improve the age of vehicles in the fleet, as well as the quality, comfort, safety and security of the commuting public.
Over the past year, Minister Henry has led the charge for a review of the vehicles used in the public transportation sector.
